Part of my struggles with "Asylum" (half finished sequel to "Dremiks" that has taken me 13 years to write) is that I am trying so very hard to write the protagonist, "Lilly" as someone very different from my other female characters.
It’s really hard! I’m also finding it hard to not let them all slide into one monolithic female archetype. I have to keep reminding myself that Igraine is the snarky one, Minerva is the reserved one, and Mairead is the idealistic one.
And it’s not just making them different from each other—it’s also allowing them to grow as characters. To me, it’s not even really worth writing a story if the characters don’t change along the way.
Interesting. I was looking at BlueSky (hoping I could find you there since I do NO other sm) and at least a couple of your articles from Fantasy Faction were mentioned there.
But I didn't find you, which you may be happy about since I have a complaint: that I can't reply to your comments here without a substack account, which for various and sundry reasons, I choose not to have. Not that you could do anything about it either, but I didn't want you to think you were always shouting into the void!
Anyway, I sought The Will of the Many at the library as you suggested, and all the copies they have available were either checked out (8 of ten) or on hold (2 of ten). People agree with you, it appears.
That’s really interesting that someone has resurrected those old articles on BlueSky… No, I do not have a BlueSky account, nor am I on TikTok or many other platforms. I push my posts out to Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest (I have no idea why I still maintain Pinterest, but it’s not super interactive, so it isn’t a drain on my energy), and I have a lurker account on X just for the rare occasion that I need to see someone’s post for my client work. I’ve basically eliminated social media interaction from my life (except for a tiny bit of Facebook because my daughter-in-law posts pictures of my grandsons there!). It’s just too much of a mental drain, and I need to preserve my waning faculties!
By the way, I still post my Tuesday posts on my other website (www.amyrosedavis.com), so you can still comment there. I screen those comments because of spam, but I’ll always approve yours! I only post the Thursday ones here on Substack, but you can comment about them over there, if you want. I’ll know what you’re talking about. ;)
And I hope you get to read “The Will of the Many” soon! I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts!
Thank you for the re-visit.

It. Is. Hard.

Thanks and best wishes!
